CONTEXT:

In the next 25-50 years, our crossing of planetary boundaries will catalyze massive change that we cannot avoid or control.

To be fully alive, resilient, connected, and nonviolent we must unwind the male training that taught us to be unemotional, coddled, separated and dominant.

To fully take that responsibility upon ourselves means to do at least some of that work with other men.

As the world around us unravels, our nervous systems will revert to the baseline of our training. Our oldest cultural training has been in individualism and perfectionism, seeking control and comfort, and shaming ourselves and others.

In that context, we are called to practice, prepare, grieve and awaken together for the sake of our partners, children, elders, collaborators, communities and all the lives and lands that have already collapsed to keep our way of life going a little longer.

In this course we invite you to:

  • Bring the shit 💩 living inside, between, and around us that needs to be composted — isolation, guilt, perfectionism, shame, denial, control.

  • Come home to our inherent aliveness, dignity, power, tenderness, and togetherness. Re-align with life and our place in the earth’s metabolism*.

  • Make better mistakes than our ancestors and imagine new possibilities beyond what modernity has sold to us.

We promise to:

  • Bring you out of your comfort zone and habitual patterns and into embodied experiences that can crack open new possibilities

  • Embrace and be present for whatever comes up - “the good, the bad, the ugly, the broken, the messy and the messed up”

  • Be in the journey with you - not above or below or outside looking in - we will bring our shit and walk through the mud together

Questions we might explore together:

  • What capacities do we need to build to be agents of connection in our communities in the face of growing forces of disconnection? What conditioning inside our bodies do we need to transform?

  • How can men stay with uncertainty and unraveling without controlling or closing off? What is possible when we cultivate our listening and witnessing and let go of our fixing and knowing?

  • Can men simultaneously experience belonging and dignity — real connection and full authenticity?

  • How do we be “good men” without cutting ourselves off from either our power & strength or our softness & vulnerability?

  • What becomes possible when we loosen our focus on what feels individually “good” and start attending to our role in our wider ecosystem? How do we awaken the felt experience of entanglement and interdependence, not just as an abstract idea? Can we include the needs of other species and future generations alongside our own?

  • Can we experience joy, pleasure, and satisfaction that isn’t predicated on someone else’s pain?

Whether you’re feeling the pain (and the longing for change) at the level of your own nervous system, your relationships, family, workplaces, and communities, “Somatics for Men” offers a deep inquiry into how we’ve been shaped as men and what capacities we need to build to become good elders.

We do this work together because no amount of individual healing can transform a deranged system that is hurtling us towards catastrophe. To paraphrase Bayo, what’s the use of self-help work when we’re sitting on the Titanic?

What this is not:

  • A men’s group promising that you can feel happier, have better sex and make more money.

  • A men’s group aimed at bringing up all our most painful stuff just for catharsis without new possibilities and ongoing practices.

  • Political education about male supremacy, its history and impacts (although we’re happy to give you resources for that)

  • Collecting tools and experiences that feel good in the moment but won’t make lasting change

  • Simple accountability on individual goals with no social context

  • Coddling each other or downplaying the impacts we have had on others

  • Stewing in shame over the things we, or our ancestors, might have done

  • Complaining, blaming, or victimizing

  • Organizing ourselves to take collective actions, force change, or fix broken systems

  • Preparing ourselves for what to do in collapse since we can’t know what will happen or what will be needed

  • A replacement for mental health crisis support or acute trauma therapy

  • Rituals to take off the performative masks we’ve been wearing, speak the stories we need to invoke at this time, face the mess we’ve inherited, awaken new possible futures, reconnect to the more-than-human world and our interdependence with it, take on our responsibility for stewardship without false hope or hopelessness

Be receptive to the teachings of your shadows.

Mourn your illusions, compost your shit, ferment yourself.

Learn from repeated mistakes. Make only new ones in the future.

Discover a whole bus of different creatures inside yourself.

Look into the mirror and release the fear of disappointability, rejection and abandonment.

Face your complicity in violence and disinvest from arrogance, superiority, and status.

Let go of the fear of ‘being less’, the pressure for ‘being more’ and the need for validation.

Deprivatize failures, depersonalize lack. We all fuck up, we all cry.

Deactivate your expectations for belonging and focus on unlearning the logic of separability.

Embrace yourself as both cute and pathetic, be courageously vulnerable.

*You do NOT need to have read Vanessa’s books to join.

*You DO need to be awake to the possibility of near-term societal collapse. By joining this group, you agree not to take any fixed position about what the future holds. You agree to be open to imagining futures that include both disaster and healing.
